IKEA + Awesome Friends = Amazing (Cheap!) Curtains

October 20th, 2009 | Posted by Emily in Home Improvement | Living Room

Sorry it’s been a few days since I last posted! Life has been crazy and I’ve been waiting for a certain package to arrive before I posted again. Lo and behold, I got home from work Monday morning and this was waiting for me…

A package pour moi?!?!? Non!

A package pour moi?!?!? Non!

I grabbed the box, took it inside, ripped it open and …..

IKEA Aina Curtains - 100% Linen/100% Awesome

IKEA Curtains - 100% Linen/100% Awesome

It was the IKEA curtains that Cori & Andrew had so graciously offered to pick up for us at their local IKEA in Chicago! I was psyched they offered because similar curtains at West Elm cost $59.99 per panel, while these snazzy IKEA ones only cost $49.99 for two panels! This was perfect because we needed 6 panels for the two large windows and two small windows in our living room/dining room area. Once Daniel got home, I put him right to work installing my West Elm curtain rods I bought forever ago (on sale!).

Don't I look awful? In my defense, I had just gotten back from the gym!

Daniel was putting 1...2....3 curtain rods! Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh! (good Dracula impression, right?)

Looking good, Daniel!

Before the curtains...

Before the curtains...

So, it took forever to get the old (ugly) curtain rods down and the new (pretty) curtain rods up, but once that was done, we put in the new curtains and loved the look (especially since we placed the curtain rods so high – it made the room look so much taller!) but we worried that the curtains were too wrinkled. So, since the curtains were washable, we decided to wash them and then put them back up. Yeah, I should’ve read the directions more carefully. While they are indeed washable, I guess you aren’t supposed to put them in the dryer because they got SUPER WRINKLED! So, I spent the better half of “The Biggest Loser” tonight ironing each panel (yes, all 6 of them!) and this is how they look before/now….

So, there you have it! Our latest home improvement project! A big thanks to Andrew & Cori for making the trek out to the ‘burbs of Chicago on our behalf! We appreciate it immensely! Next up: the front bedroom! We’ve been doing a lot to that room and can’t wait to show you!

Gorgeous! And no, I’m not just saying that because our windows look almost identical! I got some cotton ones a while back…also from IKEA, but was afraid of washing/drying them because of the wrinkle issue. (I remember throwing a tablecloth in the dryer to de-wrinkle it, and it instead adding more wrinkles.) What would fix the problem? Maybe wash, then hang to dry? I’m definitely NOT ironing! Overall, I’m very impressed with you two getting that done last night and fitting a workout in! Thanks for posting the pics. I still want to go to the Dallas IKEA sometime in the future. :)

First, the curtains look great! Actually the whole house does. I can’t wait to see it in December. They definitely make the room look “grander” (is that a word? it looks strange.)

Second, I feel bad taking so long to send them after reading all the anticipation in your blogs the last few weeks! Sorry about that. [Did you like my packing material? I try not to get plastic bags, but sometimes I forget the reusable ones. Thanks for allowing us to unload them on you…now they’re your problem ;)]

  • We’re totally digging your breezy new Ikea curtains! Gotta love getting those in the mail! You’re doing an awesome job with your house and we’re so glad you sent us over to your blog. Oh and Burger wants to be friends with your pooches.

    xo,
    Sherry (& John)

    • Well, besides the fact that I feel like a celebrity just wrote on my blog (seriously, I am blushing and squealing at my husband “SHERRY WROTE ON OUR BLOG!”), I am fairly sure that Rufus and Burger must be relatives in some fashion, because a lot of your stories about your dog sound soooo much like Rufus. They should totally be friends. If you’re ever in the Kansas City area, drop on by and we’ll introduce them. Rufus wouldn’t know what to do with himself if he met a dog his own size.
